I then had my first business trip out to Minneapolis, which I was pleasantly surprised by. The for 4th of July, a handful of us planned a very last minute (night before) trip out to the Hamptons. That was then maximized to include Shelter Island and Montauk.

And already confirmed for the rest of summer are Newport, RI, and a concluding Labor day weekend trip to Chicago, IL. Who knows, there may be a few more local weekenders and business trips, but it’s looking good!

It’s been a very good and relaxing July 4th weekend out in...

It’s been a very good and relaxing July 4th weekend out in the Hamptons, Shelter Island and Montauk.

Southampton Bound

It’s Saturday morning and I’m sitting here waiting for my friends to arrive. We’re set to leave the City at 9am and drive out to Southampton for the weekend. I can’t believe how excited I am about this little getaway. We have a small, but good group going, and it should be lots of fun with a good balance of R&R beach time, Surf Lodge, etc., complimented with two ridiculous nights out. :)

It’s all in anticipation of my much needed vacation! Next week my good girl friend from college, will be marrying another good friend of mine. And we’re headed off to Bali to celebrate! I can’t wait. I definitely need this trip, and I can’t wait to celebrate with my girl friends. Only two more days til departure.

"For if we choose only to expose ourselves to opinions and viewpoints that are in line with our own,..."

“
For if we choose only to expose ourselves to opinions and viewpoints that are in line with our own, studies suggest that we become more polarized, more set in our ways. That will only reinforce and even deepen the political divides in this country.

But if we choose to actively seek out information that challenges our assumptions and our beliefs, perhaps we can begin to understand where the people who disagree with us are coming from.

Now, this requires us to agree on a certain set of facts to debate from. That’s why we need a vibrant and thriving news business that is separate from opinion makers and talking heads. That’s why we need an educated citizenry that values hard evidence and not just assertion. As Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan famously once said, “Everybody is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts.”

Still, if you’re somebody who only reads the editorial page of The New York Times, try glancing at the page of The Wall Street Journal once in a while. If you’re a fan of Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh, try reading a few columns on the Huffington Post website. It may make your blood boil; your mind may not be changed. But the practice of listening to opposing views is essential for effective citizenship. It is essential for our democracy.
”

-
Obama’s commencement speech at University of Michigan (via dihard)

Next week when I have more time, I’m going to buy more ramps and make a risotto with asparagus, ramps, peas and cremini mushrooms. Very seasonal!

The weekend has started off right. Last night I had after work cocktails outdoors at the Crosby Hotel, and followed that up with a delicious dinner at Emporio. Other than the great company, it was also great because my entree was delicious. I ordered the ricotta agnolotti, which was my first meal this season with ramps. Ramps are so good! Especially when they’re paired with mushrooms and pasta, two other food items that I love.

So this morning, after I worked my ass off with my girl friend at an intense 930am spin class at Flywheel, I met up with two other friends at the Union Square Green Market. Perfect timing as the rain had stopped and the sun came out as we strolled through the market. And solely because of my delicious meal the night before, I left the market with ramps and oyster mushrooms. I look forward to the rest of this weekend! :)

Glorious Day

It’s a glorious day in NYC. Started the day with a coffee, followed by a soothing mani pedi. After that, I strolled into my neighborhood bicycle shop for some shoes and pedals. Followed that up with a ride over the Manhattan Bridge into DUMBO to see a good friend and his family. Hung out in the new Brooklyn Bridge Park and soaked in the sun for awhile, rode through the Heights, and back over the Manhattan Bridge. Relaxed in the afternoon strolling through Nolita with a girlfriend, then a beer on the deck. Now waiting for other girlfriends to come over and cook and watch movies.

Funny how things turn out. First I was psyched...

triestherlon:

Funny how things turn out. First I was psyched that there was a crack of sunlight when I went for my 8:30pm swim. I also noted that it was the first time that it was bright enough to SEE the Hudson River while I walked to the pool, and that I’ll be training right next to the river until the day I take the plunge into that same river.

But soon after I took this photo all desire to swim escaped me. Maybe it’s the 1.5 hours of Bikram I’ve been doing every morning, or maybe it’s the launch of Gilt City that just all caught up to me. Swim training is my favorite but I just did. not. want. to swim today. Even when I got to poolside I didn’t want to go in the water.

But like I said, funny how things turn out. I ended up having a GREAT training session because something in my brain clicked and I completely understood what the coaches were telling me. As a result I noticed an improvement in my strokes. I entered the pool thinking I was gonna drown doing this tri and I left the pool super excited about the prospects of actually being able to do this. And I guess that’s the thing about tris and marathons, the moment you doubt yourself, you prove yourself wrong. And that’s the rewarding part; the part where you’re the only one holding yourself back and you’re the only one pushing you forward.

I’m proud of her. Like I said, “you just need to train.” Can’t wait to cheer her on in July. I almost wish I was going to be right alongside her.

one forty plus.: Twitter Isn't "Over", I'm Over It.

one forty plus.: Twitter Isn't "Over", I'm Over It. :
I find this extremely timely considering my previous post.

Last week in Los Angeles I participated in a live Q&A as part of an ASCAP expo on songwriting. When the topic of Twitter came up, I explained my waning interest in it being part of my daily life.
